Mistakes are part of the learning journey. I love to challenge my students to take steps beyond what they believe they are capable of. However I don't push you beyond your limits, but I will always help you when I see you are stuck. My manner of proceeding during the lesson is to inquire construct an image about my pupil's situation, and give advise. Although I'm quite familiar with grammatical and other theory, I try to teach everything through context to make it meaningful. That way learning is engaging and fun, and it's easier to wrap one's head around things that way. I value that pupil enjoys the learning process and gets to freely choose the conversation topics.

As a teacher I am encouraging, and try to activate my students to use as much Finnish as possible. People usually tell me they can be themselves in my company. This no stress state helps them to express themselves better in Finnish as the brain has no reason to activate the sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight/freeze response) which would compromise higher brain functions. I have about 2000 hours of teaching experience, mostly online but also face to face.

As soon as you know three words, I’ll ask you to put them into a sentence. With me you won’t be ‘taught’ per se, you will be invited to learn by doing, to try things out, and to accumulate competence upon what you already know. My students quickly learn to ask me ‘can I say…? (voinks mä sanoa…?)’ followed by something they have just formulated. Before long, they start to create perfectly applicable and natural sounding Finnish sentences (which can often be short and make absolutely no sense when translated to English) by applying Finnish the same way Finns do.

The more you do it, the more naturally you'll learn to express yourself in any language! Listening to native-level speech is also essential—especially the real, everyday language that people actually use. In Finnish, for instance, spoken language can be quite different from the formal version. I'm an empathetic and patient teacher, and I can easily adjust my speaking pace and style to suit any level. I have a teaching degree in English Language and Teaching from the University of Greenwich, England, as well as a Master's degree in Multilingual Communication and Translation from Tampere University, Finland, giving me a strong knowledge base in language acquisition and efficient ways to teach a language. As a teacher, I like to create a friendly and relaxed learning environment, where my students do not have to be afraid of making mistakes. I would also encourage my students to experiment with different learning styles to find which methods motivate them the most to keep going, not forgetting to have a little fun during the process!

I have two University degrees and I have been teaching finnish and swedish both for beginners and business people. I have also worked as a translator. The most challenging mission was in Monaco, where very talented multilingual people wanted to learn swedish and finnish and learn it fast, because they did business with Scandinavian countries.

Finnish language tutor with a passion for teaching I am currently studying to become a certified class teacher (I can teach all subjects in primary school for children aged 7-12) and Russian language teacher for all ages.
